ABSTRACT

Wendy Day is the founder of Rap Coalition, a not-for-profit organization set up to help rap artists.

NORMAN KELLEY: How long have you been doing this? WENDY DAY: Five years. I started in March 1992. I was in corporate America prior to

running Rap Coalition. My background was advertising and sales, and I was very fortunate in that I made quite a bit of money. I was in Montreal at the time and I decided to come back to America, come home. I had quite a bit of money and I knew I wanted to do something to help people. I wanted to combine the money that I had with my entire business background. I have a masters degree in African-American studies and I knew I wanted to do something within the black community but wasn’t quite sure as to what. I’ve always loved rap music since the early 1980s and I decided to take the money and start Rap Coalition. It’s been five and a half years and no looking back.
