ABSTRACT

In many programmes of study, students are often asked to review literature. These assignments can take many formats. A common format is a reading task whereby students are asked to read a variety of books and journals to identify a topic of interest so as to be able to detail important knowledge related to the topic. Alternatively, students often complete a laboratory report or have to write up a study in the style of a journal article. The introduction that often forms the first section of these reports is very similar to a review of the literature, only in a condensed form. This chapter will explore the processes and product of a literature review that a student might have to write for a dissertation or independent study project.
