ABSTRACT

One of the most commonly used types of statistical test is a test of difference. This is required when a researcher is investigating whether two or more groups are different from one another in a particular characteristic (the dependent variable). The focus might be hamstring flexibility in males and females. In this instance the investigator would be trying to detect differences between males and females (two different groups) in hamstring flexibility (a particular characteristic). The alternate hypothesis would state that there would be a difference in hamstring flexibility between males and females. The null hypothesis would state there would not be a difference in hamstring flexibility between males and females.
