ABSTRACT

The CCCAFU, in its Education Review of 1994, had already identified the desire to run a training excavation which would give local people the opportunity to become involved in archaeology through a course of structured, practical fieldwork. The training excavation also provides a useful link with adult education courses in which some CCCAFU staff members are engaged. Thus a Certificate in Archaeology accredited by Cambridge University’s Board of Continuing Education provides the academic background, whilst the training excavation provides a practical application which is locally and conveniently placed. The training excavation is run over a four-week period and participants have a choice of attending for as many of those weeks as they wish. It has been funded by South Cambridgeshire District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, English Heritage and other commercial sponsor-

Credit accumulation and transfer scheme (CATs)

For those over 18 who elect to join the scheme, the accredited training excavation allows credits towards a degree to be collected. Participants in the scheme are expected to complete specific assignments along with relevant CATs and CCCAFU documentation. Ten credits are awarded for successful completion of each week of the training excavation.
