ABSTRACT

WHEN we had arrived at this city of Khoy we found here already come an ambassador sent to Timur, from [Násir-ad-Dín Faraj the Mamlúk] Sultan of Egypt, who was voyaging with twenty horsemen, and fifteen camels. They carried presents which the Sultan was offering to Timur. Among these presents were counted six ostriches brought hither from Egypt, also a beast called a Jornufa [namely a Giraffe] which was strangely made and after a fashion unknown to us.
