ABSTRACT

ON Sunday the 27th of July we left Níshápúr and travelling forward slept at a deserted uninhabited village. The next day Monday we came at nightfall to a large town called Ferrior, from which we found that the inhabitants in greater part had also fled. This was in mistrust of the soldiers of Timur’s army; and it was now about twelve days since he and the Tartar host had passed through this place, where in truth very visibly the troops had wrought much havoc. To us ambassadors however such of the inhabitants as remained none the less gave good entertainment, adding as a present for our acceptance the usual robe of kincob [gold brocade]. The country round and about this place is a waste plain, and the climate is here very hot. On Tuesday following by nightfall we had reached a large town known by the name of Asegur but after resting some few hours we set out again while it was still night and travelling on by morrow midday and at the hour of dinner had arrived at a great city which is called Okhakhan. This was Wednesday the 30th July, and in this city we were most honourably entertained, for they feasted us and supplied all our needs, bestowing on us robes of kincob as usual and aforesaid.
