ABSTRACT
AFTER THREATENING MR. VEEDLE WITH THE END OF HIS PHONE SERVICE and a visit from a burly phone repairman, Ernestine then plays Mr. Veedle a recording of his own voice during some shady dealing. At this point, Mr. Veedle capitulates and Ernestine ends the conversation: “And Mr. Veedle, there’s no reason on earth for you to feel personally persecuted. We may be the only phone company in town, but we screw everybody!” (Ernestine: Peak Experiences).
