ABSTRACT

Poblenou was the coastal sector of the former municipality of Sant Martí de

Provençals, incorporated into the City of Barcelona in 1897. The area is built

on land reclaimed from the old coastal lagoons to the south of the river

Besós delta. In the second half of the nineteenth century an urban centre,

basically of an industrial nature, was established there, constituting a new

district of Barcelona to the east of the old city, on the far side of the military

citadel and railway lines. Up until the time of the large-scale infrastructure

work for the 1992 Olympic Games it had remained cut off from the central

part of the city by substantial physical barriers.
