Introduction

This book is concerned with the experiences of children and youth in the Third World, and in particular the ways in which young people are affected by global processes including development, globalisation and the effects of international agreements and policies relating to children and youth. Given that children, youth, development and the Third World are all contested terms, lacking precise or agreed definitions, the book’s first task is to outline how and why these terms are used.
