ABSTRACT

In the mountains of southern Phrygia, just beyond the headwaters of the Maeander river, a man and a boy were leading a string of laden mules along the edge of a stone-paved road. Some fifteen kilometres behind them was the city of Apollonia, location of a regional customs office. Another fifteen kilometres in front of them was the city of Apamea, a major market town, assize centre and communications hub. The mules’ hoofs beat dully on the dusty track that ran along beside the broad margin stones of the imperial paved road.
