ABSTRACT

Through history there have been attempts to define the words. Aristotle distinguished between ‘drama’ and ‘epic’ and argued that ‘drama’ is the form proper to the stage. Brecht inverted that binary. Also through history people have found productive relationships between different aspects of the same word. ‘Performance’ now is an inclusive term covering: performance genres such as music, dance, theatre and performance art; the specific genre of ‘performance art’; and a paradigm for the investigation of culture at large.
