ABSTRACT
In saying this he was re-stating an idea that he had developed in an earlier book, An Anatomy of Drama (1976). There he looks at drama alongside play, ritual and spectacle, and identifies drama’s key quality: ‘What makes drama drama is precisely the element which lies outside and beyond the words and which has to be seen as action – or acted – to give the author’s concept its full value’ (1976: 14).
