ABSTRACT

In many countries the use of urban space has altered dramatically over the twentieth century. In some cities the space demands of the motor car now account for almost a third of urban land, rising to two-thirds in inner Los Angeles (Girardet 1992, McMichael 1993). None the less, in European cities, often considered as densely populated, over half the urban area is open space in some manifestation (Girardet 1992).
