ABSTRACT

The oft-cited link between nationalism and history is particularly marked in the modern State of Israel. From the very beginning, the future of the Zionist movement was dependent on its ability to create a link with the past. To quote Shmuel Almog:

In common with other movements, however, the process of remembering was highly selective. Both the Zionist overview of history and its interpretation of particular events reflected the replacement of religion by nationality as the focus of Jewish identity.
