ABSTRACT

Daughter of the Theban prophet Tiresias, herself gifted with prophetic (mantic) skill. When the Epigoni, sons of the Seven against Thebes, captured that city, they dedicated Manto to Apollo at Delphi as the finest prize, together with a number of other Thebans. While at Delphi, Manto bore to Alcmaeon (leader of the Epigoni) two children, Amphilochus and Tisiphone, both of whom were reared at Corinth by King Creon. Manto eventually led the other Theban prisoners from Delphi to Asia Minor, where they had been directed by the oracle to found a colony. Manto herself was said to have founded Apollo’s oracle at Clarus near Colophon, where she also married the Cretan Rhacius. They had a son, the famous seer Mopsus 2.
