ABSTRACT

The supreme minstrel of Greek mythology: his loss of his wife Eurydice forms the most famous of romantic myths. He was the son, or pupil, of Apollo (or of Oeagrus, king of Thrace), his mother being the Muse Calliope. He was also a devotee of Dionysus, a god whose worship is likewise closely connected with Thrace. The mystic religious cult of Orphism was named after Orpheus, and perhaps founded by him if, as is possible, he was (divested of his myths) a historical character.
