ABSTRACT

Son of Oicles and Hypermnestra 2. He was a seer and received his prophetic powers by inheritance from his great-grandfather Melampus.

He took part in the Calydonian boarhunt and drove Adrastus, ruler of Argos, from his throne. When Adrastus came back from Sicyon (of which he had meanwhile become king), the two were reconciled; Amphiaraus restored him his kingdom, but received Adrastus’ sister Eriphyle as his wife. A further agreement was made between them, that in any further quarrels between the two Eriphyle should arbitrate and her decision should be final. He had two sons, Alcmaeon and Amphilochus, and two daughters.
