ABSTRACT

One day Aphrodite came to Anchises while he was looking after sheep on Mount Ida. Zeus, angry with her for laughing at the other gods and goddesses when they succumbed to her snares, made her fall in love with this handsome mortal. She appeared before him as a mortal girl and from their union on the mountains Aeneas was born. When Aphrodite revealed to Anchises who she was, he was terrified because of the punishment which had been inflicted previously on mortals who had become the lovers of goddesses. But she told him that he would not suffer for what had happened, so long as he disclosed it to no one.
