ABSTRACT

The gods of two rivers of that name, who are often confused. One of the streams runs through Sicyon’s territory into the Gulf of Corinth, the other through Boeotia into the Aegean Sea. Their gods were sons of Oceanus and Tethys. One of them married the nymph Metope, a daughter of the River Ladon. They had two sons, Ismenus and Pelagon, and twenty daughters, including Aegina. The river-god searched for her and was told by Sisyphus, king of Corinth, that Zeus had abducted her to the isle of Oenone (later called Aegina after her). When he pursued Zeus, he was driven back with thunderbolts. As a result live coals were found in his bed for many years after. Other daughters of Asopus gave their names to islands, cities, and rivers: Salamis, Corcyra, Thebe, Ismene.
