ABSTRACT

A monstrous creature with a hundred arms, the offspring of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky). Poseidon is occasionally mentioned as his father. When the other gods rebelled against Zeus, Thetis summoned Briareos to save him. He helped to put the rising down, and was rewarded by Zeus with a bride, Cymopole. He was also appointed to settle a dispute over the ownership of Corinth. He awarded the Acrocorinth (a high hill on which the citadel was built) to Helios; the rest of the place he gave to Poseidon. His normal duty, in association with his brothers Gyes and Cottus, was to guard the Titans confined in Tartarus. Homer indicates that he was also called Aegaeon.
