ABSTRACT

A Roman goddess of the Artemis type, a virgin huntress who tricked any who wished to make love to her by sending them into a shady cave to which she promised to come; she would then make off. Janus, the god of two faces, however, was not to be deceived, and took her before she could escape. In return for her favours, he gave her power over doorways (her name means ‘she of the hinge’) and over the whitehorn, which was sacred to Janus and thought to protect the house from evil spirits. Ovid calls her Carna, confusing her with a nymph of that name.
