ABSTRACT

A Thracian king who killed one of the serpents which drew the chariots of Demeter’s son or servant, Triptolemus, in jealousy of the powers the young man had displayed in granting benefits to his people. Demeter brought another serpent, and Triptolemus flew away; but Carnabon, as a warning to mankind, was placed by the goddess in the sky as the constellation Ophiuchus, the Serpent-Holder.
