ABSTRACT

Daughter of Pontus (‘Sea’) and Gaia (‘Land’ or ‘Earth’); the name means ‘whale’ or ‘seamonster’. She married her brother Phorcys and bore the three Graiae (Pemphredo, Enyo, and Deino, whose hair was grey from birth) and the three Gorgons (Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa). Hesiod calls her the mother of Echidna and Ladon also.
