ABSTRACT

A king of Arcadia and the father of Merope, whom he gave in marriage to Cresphontes, the Heraclid king of Messenia, so as to win his alliance and preserve the autonomy of Arcadia from the Messenians; whereupon Cypselus took charge of Merope’s son Aepytus, the heir to the throne of Messenia. But then Polyphontes, a kinsman of Cresphontes, killed him, and seized the throne, and forced Merope to marry him. Later Cypselus helped his grandson Aepytus to regain Messenia.
