ABSTRACT

Son of Aristaeus and Autonoe. He was trained as a hunter, by his father or by Chiron. He offended Artemis, either by claiming to have superior skill at hunting, or because he wanted to marry Semele his aunt, or (and this is the reason most frequently given) because he saw Artemis bathing naked on Mount Cithaeron. To prevent his boasting of this exploit, the goddess turned him into a stag which his own hounds then devoured; or she threw a deerskin over him, with the same result. The hounds were saddened by the disappearance of their master, but the Centaur Chiron made a statue of Actaeon so lifelike that they were appeased.
