ABSTRACT

This section examines the concepts of space, place and territory and their relevance to spatial planning, as an analytical contribution to the changing role of planning. It has been felt important to define these terms as they are used in various ways in planning literature, often without clear definition, and yet - it is argued here - they have significantly different conceptual bases. The terms are defined below, and the inter-relationship between them is also illustrated in Table 2.1. It is this relationship that is examined in the subsequent sections, as the chapter argues that the changes in the concepts and their relationships need to be taken on board in our changing view of the role of spatial planning in society.
