Critical incident stress management is an integrated, comprehensive, multicomponent program focusing on crisis intervention with traumatic stress. Originally developed as a system of crisis intervention and stress management for emergency service workers, it has since been expanded to use with disaster workers and citizens impacted by disaster. CISM may include, but is not limited to, the following: preincident education and preparation, continuing stress education, consultation to administrators and supervisors, significant-other support services, family support services, individual crisis intervention, peer counseling, on-scene support services, demobilization, crisis management briefing, defusing, critical incident stress debriefing (CISD), pastoral crisis intervention, follow-up, referral, research and development, and other services as required.
