ABSTRACT

Recent demographic reports indicate that of all the Asian American people living in the United States, 63% are foreign born. Immigration trends show that 34% of all persons who immigrated to the United States in 1996 came from Asian countries (U.S. Bureau of Census, 1997). Although many Asian Americans have achieved considerable academic and financial success, many more have experienced heightened levels of stress and failure in different areas of their lives. As Baruth and Manning (1999) noted, language problems, dismal employment opportunities, and conflicting familial roles and expectations represent serious risk factors that compromise the mental health and well-being of many Asian immigrants who live in the United States.
