ABSTRACT

The question which will interest us in Part III is this: “How does modern man establish his existence?” We do not aim at a complete answer. From the many ways in which an establishment is achieved we select only two: the moral way and a Protestant way. Perhaps there are other ways which in the eyes of some people are more characteristically modern, such as the aesthetic, and the political one, or the ways characterized by vital or pragmatic language. Also the modern forms of the Jewish and Roman Catholic faith could have been chosen. I do not, however, possess a knowledge of these ways which is intimate enough to guarantee a satisfying analysis. Yet, it will help to understand modern man and his language situation if we gain a clearer insight into the moral (in this chapter) and a Protestant manner (in Chap. VIII) of establishing one’s existence.
