ABSTRACT
In the twentieth century soldiers like those of the United Nations are deployed to keep the peace. To the Romans such an idea would have appeared absurd, and their conception of war remained unchanged: ‘man does not go to war in order to fight, but to win’. 1 This success, which is the aim of every military enterprise, depended to some degree on the use of tactics; first you had to move your army and then get it to fight.
