ABSTRACT
Before we look at the rise of mobile phones, and on to texting more specifically, we look briefly at the historical development of technologically-mediated communication, to contextualise the current use of mobile phones by adults and children worldwide. We pay particular attention to the increased popularity of and interest in text messaging as a function of these devices, and reflect on the nature of text versus talk in this very specific context.
