ABSTRACT

Can workplace partnership foster a high level of commitment simultaneously to the organization and the union among a substantial proportion or even a majority of a company’s workforce? The answer to this question goes to the heart of the contention that partnership can deliver mutual gains. Key employer objectives like higher productivity and better performance, appear more likely to be realized if partnership can increase employees’ commitment to the organization. The institutional security and representative capacity of unions is likely to be enhanced if partnership can contribute to increased commitment on the part of union members. Gains for employees, like better pay and conditions and more secure jobs, also appear more probable to the degree that both types of commitment arise and a better industrial relations climate is fostered.
