St Basil, Archbishop of Caesarea, wrote: ‘anyone who needs a great many things is poor; and you have a great many needs because your desires are many and insatiable’.53 Even more telling is Ambrose: poverty implies need, so ‘he is not rich who wants anything, nor poor who does not want’; and John Chrysostom: Christ ‘was rich because he was poor’.54
