ABSTRACT

In principle we can make a distinction between instinct and intuition. Instinct suggests that which is bred in, that is part of the genetic inheritance. Examples of this include chicks imprinting on their mothers, and parent birds responding to gaping chick mouths by providing food. We might think of reflexes, such as blinking when something comes too close to our eye, as being instinctive. We do not learn these behaviours from specific experience, but rather they develop ‘automatically’.
