ABSTRACT

The terms psycho-education and multi-modal education have been coined to describe programmes in which a combination of interventions promote learning and psychological change. In Chapter 5 it was acknowledged that a single intervention is rarely successful; this would appear to be even more true for people with a chronic health condition. The use of psycho-education or multi-modal education amongst people diagnosed with rheumatoid disease or cancer will be considered and then the concept of empowerment will be discussed and, by way of an

example, applied to people with diabetes. Finally, the research implications of the findings to date will be mentioned.
