ABSTRACT

What follows is a brief and provocative anthology exploring aspects of creativity across a wide range of cultural practices. The texts are organised by topic and to some extent by mode or medium. They mix passages of practical observation and illustration with those of a more theoretical or speculative nature. Not all the texts agree with one another; many are in open conflict. They also have all the intrinsic limitation of being printed words, whereas most of the practices referred to are in other materials and media and can only be fully realised and experienced as such. That said, there is still some sense in describing and discussing them. With this in mind, each cluster of texts is prefaced by a pre-text which helps set the scene or bend the agenda, depending how you see it. For the rest, as usual, it is in the gaps between the texts and in the reader’s attempts to bridge – or fill or widen or get round – those gaps that the most creative moves are likely to be made. The overall aim is to keep on opening up the issue of what ‘being creative’ has been, is and may yet be.
