Once you take on your first client, a contract comes into being even on the smallest projects. Your client will treat you as a professional and will expect you to have the necessary expertise to do the job. It is a requirement of most of the well-known professional institutions that surveyors carry professional indemnity insurance. This does not come cheap. Not having insurance is both against the ‘rules’ and rather foolhardy because we are all human and mistakes can happen. If for some reason you were found negligent, then the costs involved could run into many thousands of pounds.
