ABSTRACT

Having considered some of the uses to which history has, whether deliberately or inadvertently, been put in the past – up to the period of modernity, which (in the terminology I’m adopting) culminated in the later twentieth century – it’s now time to move to the present and to our situation in postmodernity. For as times change, and we with them, so do our conceptions of the nature and purposes of history.
