ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will explore how to change the language of texts so that they are suitable for new audiences and purposes: the skills of editorial writing or textual recasting. To begin with we shall think about the key principles that underlie the way texts are put together: selection and combination and Halliday’s three functions of language. These principles will help us to see how to transform the language of texts. A case study ends the chapter, exploring how to simplify an informational text for a younger audience.
