ABSTRACT
We shall look at extracts from Shakespeare’s tragedy of ambition Macbeth, and his so-called comedy The Taming of the Shrew which tries to teach men how to put women in their place! Initially we shall look at ways of translating older English into modern English. Then we will need to explore some bigger issues about restaging Shakespeare to make him relevant to today. How can we put on a play such as The Taming of the Shrew which has a wife-beater as a hero? This will help you think about major creative rewriting tasks in which you transform literary texts.
