ABSTRACT
Building a megalith required many activities, of both a practical and a ritual nature. While a detailed discussion of the construction of different chambers – dolmens and passage graves – will follow later, many aspects of construction are common to all megaliths and may conveniently be introduced here. Initially, it undoubtedly involved prolonged consultations among the community members on appropriate location and auspicious time, negotiations with master builders and workforce, choosing the design of the tomb, remuneration, etc. These processes, for which there is hardly any archaeological evidence, were at the core of any megalithic building activity and could have been just as long and complicated as the actual construction of the tomb.
