ABSTRACT
My first book was called Teaching Teaching, published in 1974. It grew out of my research into classrooms and teacher training and I was keen to start it with a chapter describing the evolution of teacher education. This chapter gives an account of teacher training from classical times right up to the twentieth century and researching it was probably one of my most enjoyable experiences. The exercise taught me a lot and what I learned has been very useful ever since.
