ABSTRACT

Joseph Strutt’s assertions were followed, with qualifications, by John Nyren in his The Cricketers of My Time (1833). Nyren preferred to believe that the game could be traced back to Saxon times, but accepted Strutt’s assertion that the term club ball was derived from the Welsh word clwppa and the Danish word bol. Somewhat in contradiction, he also described club ball as being similar to trap ball, a game that probably had more in common with baseball than with cricket.
