ABSTRACT

There are three variants of the public school fives: Eton, Rugby and Winchester. All the major public schools play one of these three forms. The games are very similar in that the ball has to hit the front wall, facing the players, above a certain line. The server and the returner must hit the ball against a side wall before it hits the front wall, after which striking the front wall will suffice. The Rugby game is played in an enclosed space with four walls, the Eton with three walls. There are various features peculiar to the Eton court, such as steps and buttresses against which the ball can be hit. In addition, the Eton ball is slightly larger and heavier. Winchester fives is a variant of Rugby fives, with a buttress running along the left-hand wall.
