ABSTRACT
By the nineteenth century, Shrove Tuesday was often a time of confrontation between the players of traditional football and the authorities. In Derby, there were repeated Shrove Tuesday confrontations between footballers and the police until the game was eventually suppressed. Successful demonstrations by players meant that it was not until 1895 that the Dorking Shrove Tuesday game was finally outlawed.
