ABSTRACT

A generic term which is most often used to describe a derivative of bowls in which nine skittles, or ‘pins’, are placed in a diamond formation on a circular metal plate on a platform. The player has three ‘cheeses’, which are disks made of lignum vitae, to throw at the skittle. Points are awarded for each skittle knocked down and another turn is awarded if all are knocked down. Each set of throws is called a ‘chalk’, three of which make up a game.
