ABSTRACT

Common in the early part of the twentieth century in the industrial regions of the north of England and Scotland, whippet racing developed in response to the decline of rabbit coursing in the late Victorian period. The whippet itself is a cross between a greyhound and a terrier, which presumably explains its combination of speed and tenaciousness.
