ABSTRACT

What I want to do in this paper is pick up on some of the conference discussion around cultural studies as a radical practice. In particular I want to focus on the issue that’s bubbled up in a number of sessions concerning the relationship of the researcher to various formulations of “the people” researched upon. My own angle on the question is an interest in media audience studies and what cultural studies does or could do in this area—including rendering the notion of “audience” itself more problematic.
