ABSTRACT

My daughter Rachel was what is known as an easy baby. I didn't know it at the time and even tried various elimination diets to see if she fussed in response to a particular food that I was eating. 1 It turned out that she was fussing, as much as she did fuss, because she was a baby. In general she was an observant, interested infant who loved to nurse, adored her pacifier, and sat quietly or fell asleep in restaurants. When she was two months old, I started leaving her for two to three hours a day five days a week in order to teach; otherwise, she and I were together. Before she was six months old she had been to two professional conferences, an out-of-town lecture, and an on-campus job interview.
