ABSTRACT
The preceding passage was published in The Nation, not in the last few years,
but in 1970. The wondrous new technology that was supposed to bring about
this com munications revolution was not the inform ation superhighway, but
cable television. The author went on to argue that governm ent should make
a “com m itm ent for an electronic highway system to facilitate the exchange
of information and ideas.”2
